FAQ's

"I’ve never had any type of aesthetic procedure done before. I had some lines and a scar on my face I was really feeling self-conscious about, and makeup just wasn’t working anymore. I trusted Dr. Hurd and the nurses at New River Aesthetics to take care of me and do it safely. After I had my procedure done, I felt so good. Even though I didn’t tell anyone what I had done, I kept getting compliments on how rested and good I looked!"
- Becky from the New River Valley

What can aesthetic dermatology do for me?
  • remove wrinkles, frown lines, and crow's-feet
  • diminish sun spots, age spots, uneven pigmentation, and rosacea
  • create fuller, more supple lips and cheeks
  • erase sagging, puffy lower eyelids
  • give you firmer, smoother, more evenly toned skin
  • minimize bumps, pockmarks, acne scars, and depressions
  • remove and permanently reduce unwanted hair
  • make facial spider veins disappear
  • reduce large pores
  • make scars nearly invisible
  • reduce excessive sweating of the underarms and palms
Please understand that aesthetic procedures can help considerably with many skin conditions, but everyone's skin and body works differently, so results may differ from person to person. The doctor or nurse practitioner will discuss with you beforehand what types of results to expect based on his or her extensive experience in aesthetic procedures.

How do I know which procedure I should get?

The members of the medical team at New River Aesthetics are knowledgeable about current aesthetic treatments and technologies, and are here to help you make the most appropriate decisions for your skin.

Your first visit will be a consultation, where you will learn about the procedures available to you; your best options for getting the results you want, as well as their benefits and potential risks; how many treatments you may need; and the cost of treatment.

You may come to us for aesthetic treatment, but because ours is also a dermatology practice, the team may identify underlying factors or other medical conditions that are causing your skin problems. Our physician and nurses can take those conditions into account when evaluating which aesthetic procedures may be of more benefit to you, rather than just choosing a procedure that may be the most popular of the day. They can also tell you if your condition requires additional treatment or a different treatment than you are seeking.

Why should I choose New River Aesthetics over a spa or a non-dermatologist's office?

There are many places today to receive cosmetic skin treatments. Spas, hair salons, and even many doctors' offices offer injections, cosmetics, and laser treatment to enhance your skin's appearance. But only a board certified dermatologist is highly trained in the care and treatment of your skin - the largest and most visible organ of your body.

While spas create a luxurious atmosphere, it is important to know that there is a vast difference between "technicians" working in a spa and the trained medical staff of New River Aesthetics. At New River, you get the experience of skilled medical professionals working in the safe and sanitary environment of a doctor's office.

That is why getting your aesthetic skin treatments done in a dermatologist's office is so important.

Additionally, at New River Aesthetics, you will get unparalleled experience you can trust. Dr. Daniel Hurd is the only board certified dermatologist in the New River Valley and points west in Virginia. He is board certified by the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. He has studied under world-renowned dermatologic and Mohs skin cancer surgeons and laser specialists and has received numerous national awards for his medical lectures and research. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.

How long will it take me to recover from the procedures?

All treatments are minimally- or non-invasive, and use the latest technology in lasers, injections, and topical treatments. They involve no cutting or surgery, so pain and downtime are minimal, and you can be back to your normal routine -- usually the same day.

Some procedures will leave the skin red or sensitive, and may require you to stay out of the sun or cold for a few days. Please look under the various procedures on this website for specific recovery information.

Do the procedures hurt?

All treatments are minimally- or non-invasive, and use the latest technology in lasers, injections, and topical treatments. They involve no cutting or surgery, so pain and downtime are minimal. You may experience heat, a feeling like a rubber band snapping against your skin, or small pin pricks, depending on the procedure. We often use anesthetic creams to ease most discomfort.

Does my insurance cover these procedures?

Generally, insurance will not cover aesthetic treatments. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and cash as payment at the time of your appointment. We cannot accept checks.

How much do the procedures cost?

Each procedure's cost will depend on the amount of treatment required, the size of the body area to be treated, and how many follow-up visits are required. Your first visit will be a consultation, where you will learn about the procedures available to you; your best options for getting the results you want, as well as their benefits and potential risks; how many treatments you may need; and the cost of treatment.

What can a nurse practitioner do?

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical experience, which enables him or her to diagnose and manage most common and many chronic illnesses, either independently or as part of a health care team. At New River Aesthetics, our nurse practitioners not only perform aesthetic procedures, but can also examine, diagnose, and prescribe treatment for most skin conditions.

How early should I arrive for my appointment?

We recommend that new patients arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete the necessary paperwork.

What if I can't keep my appointment?

Please notify our office as soon as possible if you are unable to make your scheduled appointment. For treatments requiring greater than a 30-minute visit, a ONE WEEK NOTICE of cancellation is necessary. For treatments requiring less than a 30-minute visit, a 48-hour notice of cancellation is necessary. If you cancel your appointment with less than these notices, your deposit is non-refundable. In addition, if you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, you will be billed for the lost appointment time.

Do you keep a cancellation list?

Due to the number of patients waiting several months for appointments, we are unable to keep a cancellation list. Please feel free to call our office Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to see if we have had any cancellations.

Can you remove tattoos?

While some dermatologists have the capability to remove tattoos, we choose not to offer this procedure at this time.
